The damage caused to Crimea due to the water blockade could amount to more than 1 trillion rubles. This assessment was made by the head of the committee on legislation of the Crimean parliament, deputy head of the working group on assessing the consequences of the blockade, Sergei Trofimov. Yesterday, July 3, the Arbitration Court of Crimea registered the first lawsuit to recover more than 152 billion rubles from Ukraine. as compensation for damage from the water blockade of the peninsula.
“Now private organizations and individual entrepreneurs, who also suffered, will be able to join this lawsuit. There are such facts, and they are not isolated, when people and enterprises suffered enormous losses due to the water blockade. Thus, the amount of cumulative damage, according to a rough estimate announced at the working group, could amount to more than 1 trillion rubles,” Mr. Trofimov told RIA Novosti.
According to Sergey Trofimov, due to the blocking of the North Crimean Canal in 2014, water supply was limited on the peninsula, which affected industrial and agricultural enterprises. All this led to the severe consequences of the drought in the Crimea.
The problem with water in Crimea escalated after the annexation of the peninsula to Russia. By decision of the Ukrainian authorities in 2014, the water supply to the North Crimean Canal was cut off, which provided 85-87% of Crimea’s water needs for drinking and household needs. Water, except for drinking purposes, was used for irrigation of 140 thousand hectares of farmland.
