The II ski marathon “Galich Zaozerye”, part of the RussiaLoppet marathon series, brought together more than 1,300 participants from 39 regions of the country on February 17 in the Galichsky district of the Kostroma region. Yulia Chekaleva, an international master of sports, two-time bronze medalist of the World Championship and World Cup stages, and multiple champion of Russia, came to the start of the 50-kilometer race of the tournament. This was not the first acquaintance of the Vologda skier with the tournament in the Kostroma region. Last year she already won marathon gold here, finishing with a three-minute lead over her closest pursuer. This year, Yulia Chekaleva completed two laps of 25 kilometers in 2 hours 39 minutes 14 seconds, and again did not give her rivals a chance, finishing in splendid isolation.
“Thank you to the opponents for the fight! Of course, the weather made adjustments – on the second lap it started snowing and the wind picked up. I’m glad I made it to the finish line. But the track is gorgeous, thanks to the organizers! I’ve been participating (in the Galich Zaozerye tournament) for the second year, everything is at the highest level!”
Ski races “Galich Zaozerye” took place this year for the fourth time. Last year, the tournament program included for the first time a marathon distance of 50 km, which immediately became part of the prestigious series of Russian ski marathons RussiaLoppet. Titled athletes whose names are known to sports fans in Russia have already taken part in the tournament: Olympic bronze medalist Natalya Korosteleva; World Cup winner Yulia Tikhonova; world champion among youth Raul Shakirzanov; leading Russian marathon runners, masters of sports Alexey Baryshnikov, Sergey Artamonov, Andrey Alipkin.
