The United States is not pushing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate with Russia, White House spokesman John Kirby said.
“No one from the US is pushing him to the negotiating table. We will not discuss with the Russians the end of the war without the participation of Ukraine, there are no negotiations now, because Zelensky made it clear, and he cannot be blamed for this, that he is not ready for them, ”Kirby said (quote according to RIA Novosti).
The representative of the White House once again stressed that the decision on further negotiations with Russia should be made by Kyiv.
Earlier today, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov called for “luring” to the negotiating table not Russian President Vladimir Putin, but the Ukrainian leader. The Kremlin spokesman stressed that Moscow is happy to welcome any peacekeeping efforts and support them.
Since the beginning of hostilities in Ukraine, the parties have held negotiations several times. The first three face-to-face meetings took place in Belarus in February-March, and the fourth round of the Russian-Ukrainian dialogue was held on March 29 in Istanbul. Later, the process was frozen, since Ukraine withdrew from it.
The leaders of Western countries have repeatedly stated the need to resume the negotiation process. Among them are US and French Presidents Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron.
