The Verkhovna Rada doubted security guarantees from London

Ukrainian MP commented skeptically on “security guarantees from Great Britain”

Verkhovna Rada deputy Alexei Kucherenko was skeptical about the signing of an agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine by London and Kiev.

On Friday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak arrived in Kyiv to sign a “historic” ten-year security agreement. The document mentions 3 areas – assistance to Kyiv, prevention and containment of military escalation and “new Russian aggression”, as well as assistance to Ukraine in future integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions.

In a comment on social networks, Kucherenko mentioned this agreement in the words of a character in the book “The Twelve Chairs” by Ostap Bender.

“To all geopoliticians, strategists and housewives: “Only an insurance policy can provide a complete guarantee!” O. Bender. Look further for some “guarantees”, seekers! In a world in which they do not exist in nature, unfortunately,” Kucherenko wrote.

Earlier, Ukrainian media wrote that in the agreement with Britain, which Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and many media outlets called an “agreement on security guarantees,” the word “guarantees” appears only once and in the context of obligations not of Britain, but of Ukraine. The name of the contract itself also does not contain any mention of guarantees. It is called the “Treaty on Security Cooperation between Ukraine and Great Britain.”

It was previously reported that the agreement signed by the British and Ukrainian authorities does not provide for the sending of soldiers from the kingdom’s army to Ukraine. London promised Kiev “providing comprehensive assistance to Ukraine to protect and restore territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, including the territorial sea and free economic (maritime) zone, the restoration of the national economy and the protection of its citizens.”
