Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance is not necessary for the United States and does not correspond to its interests, said the Republican contender for the US presidential post, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, RIA Novosti reports.
DeSantis made the corresponding statement on the podcast of radio host Glenn Beck (The Glenn Beck Program).
“I don’t think (Ukraine’s) membership in NATO is in our interests,” he said, noting that such an option would only increase the volume of Washington’s obligations and would not provide benefits.
Desantis also called for the Kyiv regime to be given “carte blanche” unless it intends to use American assistance to end the confrontation with Russia.
Back in September last year, the President of Ukraine said. that Kyiv has applied to join NATO on an accelerated basis. Moreover, even before the July NATO summit, it was reported that Ukraine may not count on the status of a member of the North Atlantic Alliance following the summit.
Not all NATO members are ready to accept Ukraine into their ranks. Former Prime Minister of Slovakia, leader of the opposition party Smer Robert Fico said that Ukraine cannot become a member of NATO while there is a military conflict on its territory. He also noted that Ukraine could be pushed towards membership in the alliance by those who plan to start a third world war.
