The Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) suspects the Fakel Voronezh club of participating in fixed matches that took place at the winter training camp, RIA Novosti reports citing information from the organization’s website.
Representatives of the UAF believe that this year several match-fixing matches with the participation of a number of teams could have been played in Turkey and Cyprus. The chairman of the UAF ethics and fair play committee, Francesco Baranka, said that “a Ukrainian football player suspended in Ukraine for fixed matches” plays in Fakel. He did not name the athlete, but said that now Fakel “is a participant in a significant number of suspicious matches.”
Baranka also said that “football swindlers from Ukraine are moving to Russia”, and also that “referees could be the key to manipulation in many matches this year.”
A UAF representative said that “clubs from different countries take part in such matches”, games are often not announced, quickly organized and “held behind closed doors”, and “their spectators are agents and scouts”. He also called the scouts “a necessary part of the manipulation, because they give the opportunity to bet around the world on matches without any sporting value.”
RIA Novosti reports that Crimean-born Igor Kalinin, who received a Russian passport in 2014, plays for Fakel.
In 2015, the footballer, who then played in Luhansk Zorya, was suspected in Ukraine of participating in fixed matches. After moving to Russia, Kalinin played for Krasnodar, Rubin, Ural, Dynamo and Rostov, and he has been on loan at Fakel since September 2022.
