Many people can no longer wait to welcome spring, and the third and last month of winter, as if taking into account the wishes of the workers, began with a thaw. But the warm start is deceptive; the frosts will return. The unevenness of the weather during December and January from frost to above-zero temperatures and back suggests that the same inconsistent weather will be in Moscow in February. The head of the Meteo forecasting center, Alexander Shuvalov, spoke about this during a live broadcast from the MK press center.

“February began with an outright thaw,” the forecaster said. “Positive temperatures are 6-8 degrees higher than normal, these are very high values, and they most likely correspond to the second half of March.”

What else will characterize the first ten days of February? Low precipitation and low cloudiness, when the spiers of high-rise buildings will not be visible, starting from a level of 100-150 m. You don’t have to wait much for the sun at the beginning of the month, especially when there is advection (transfer of air mass in the horizontal direction) – the onset of heat from the south- western and westerly flows, with cyclonic activity on the European territory of Russia. The large amount of snow below also has an effect: the height of the snow cover still exceeds the norm for this time of year (for example, on January 31, the height of the snow cover was 39 cm at VDNKh, more than 50 cm in Tushino).

In the first half of February, “weather swings” await us again. “We will move out of the thaw into slight frosts,” Shuvalov said. – For example, on Saturday February 3 it will be –3–5, then on Sunday again from 0 to +1, then by Monday –4–6. I called it “dancing around 0,” which, of course, will lead to icy conditions,” Shuvalov noted, expressing hope that public utilities will be ready for this. Ice, according to him, will be our main enemy in the coming days.

The weather forecaster warned Muscovites: do not delude yourself with the warm start of February; cold weather will come after it again. There are signs that on February 8-10 the temperature may “collapse” to -20. And there is nothing unusual about this, “it’s February after all.”

But with the arrival of frost, we will finally, most likely, see the sun, which we all miss so much now. And before that, according to the expert, there is hope that the sun will please us with its “emergence” on February 3 (but this is not certain).

Well, weather-dependent people (or those who consider themselves such) are most worried about the fall of Moscow into a deep baric trough predicted by meteorologists (a strip of low pressure extended in the form of a “trough” from the center of the cyclone and located between two areas of high pressure – AVT. ) In the next few days. It is known that due to a sharp decrease in blood pressure, this category may experience headaches. However, Shuvalov believes that in this case there is no cause for concern. “The deterioration of the condition of weather-dependent people depends on the sharpness of the change in pressure, and in the near future the changes will nevertheless be smoothed out,” he said. People should not “grab their heads,” as there is a slow decrease in pressure from 740 to 725-720 millimeters of mercury, which will be extended over three days (starting from February 1), which means that the body will have time to adapt.

Analyzing the past two winter months, the forecaster noted that “the winter (which, however, is not over yet) turned out to be unusual from all points of view, especially from the point of view of the development of atmospheric processes.” “December in Moscow began with a negative anomaly… and the second half was cut off by six days of thaw,” he recalled. – And January began with very severe frosts, the likes of which we haven’t had for a long time: – 25–27. By the end of January, winter and cold weathered out, and everything ended with a thaw again.” But still, last January became the fourth coldest month of this century, along with 2006, 2010 and 2016. Its average temperature was 4 degrees below the climate norm.

The expert did not agree that this winter is somehow “particularly abnormal,” as many call it, noting that “it doesn’t change from year to year, and during the season there can be periods of both very warm weather and very cold.”

In conclusion, Alexander Shuvalov admitted that “due to the abundance of snow and the abundance of cold weather, compared to previous years, my soul asks for a quicker spring.” And it seems that many will agree with the meteorologist. But the expert did not say when spring will come, when this long-awaited “surge of warmth” will happen, noting that “long-term weather forecasts are a mystery.” Even about what the weather will be like on February 23, the weather forecaster promised to tell only in two weeks.
