The system of admission to universities for engineering specialties may change

The Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation plans from 2024 “to reduce the emphasis on the Russian language when enrolling applicants for engineering specialties.” This statement was made by the head of the department Valery Falkov.
He himself called this proposal revolutionary enough for universities. And he clarified that applicants for engineering disciplines will be admitted in three subjects: mathematics, physics and computer science. “Russian language” will be counted as an additional discipline.
In fact, the proposal cannot be called entirely new. There was a time when, for example, in MSTU. N. E. Bauman, when applying for some technical specialties, points for technical school disciplines were summed up, and the Russian language was taken into account simply as a test. This time, it is rather not about excluding one subject and reducing its importance in the admissions campaign, but about changing the emphasis.
In the last few years, the interest of schoolchildren in physics has been declining. The number of graduates of secondary educational institutions who choose this subject for passing the State Final Attestation is declining: last year 124,000 graduates took physics – this is the sixth largest subject. Compared to 2021, physics has “slid” in popularity, leaving not only the Russian language and mathematics ahead, but also social science, biology and informatics and ICT. The average USE score in physics also began to decline. In order to raise the prestige of the subject, as well as to strengthen the level of applicants entering engineering disciplines at universities, it was proposed as early as 2024 to admit applicants to technical institutes in three mandatory USE – mathematics, computer science and physics.

In Moscow, 82,000 people applied for the Unified State Examination through the mos.ru portal, of which about 10,000 were school graduates of previous years.
