The Supreme Court of Russia satisfied the claim of Roskomnadzor and revoked the license of the electronic media from the Novaya Gazeta website. In edition reportedthat they intend to appeal the decision of the court. Earlier, the Basmanny Court of Moscow revoked the license of the print version of Novaya Gazeta.
In March this year, Roskomnadzor issued two warnings to the newspaper for not labeling “foreign agent” when mentioning two non-profit organizations. Representatives of Novaya Gazeta drew attention to the fact that in the first case, the lack of marking was a technical error, after a warning from the regulator, it was immediately corrected. In the second case, there was no marking, since the court declared the decision against the NPO illegal and ruled to exclude it from the register of foreign agents.
The editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta and Nobel Prize winner Dmitry Muratov suggested that the court limit itself to a fine, since the publication had already suspended its activities for a year. “This decision will deprive people of their jobs, and readers their right to information,” added Mr. Muratov (quoted by RIA Novosti).
September 5, the Basmanny Court of Moscow on the suit of Roskomnadzor annulled license for the print version of Novaya Gazeta. A day later the court acknowledged invalid registration of the magazine “New story-gazeta”.
On March 28, Novaya Gazeta suspended its work after warnings from Roskomnadzor. The publication planned to resume publication after the completion of the military operation in Ukraine. Subsequently, the journalists of the newspaper created a new project – “Novaya Gazeta. Europe”. Kirill Martynov, who was recognized by the Ministry of Justice as a foreign agent in early September, became the editor-in-chief of the new edition. Website “Novaya Gazeta. Europe” blocked.
