A prisoner convicted of attempting to sell a large quantity of drugs showed rare persistence. In order to leave the colony earlier, he went all the way to the Supreme Court. But his sentence was reduced by only one day.

The story began in 2017 in the city of Nyagan, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Ugra. As the investigation established, in the period from January 25 to March 9, a man and his accomplices tried to sell a large batch of drugs. On March 9, he was detained and soon appeared in court. Initially, he was also accused of attempting to launder money; on two counts, he received 7 years and 1 month in a maximum security colony. The time spent in custody before sentencing was counted towards the term of serving the sentence.

Nyagan was not satisfied with this court decision, he filed an appeal, and then appealed to the cassation court. As a result, the charge of money laundering was dropped, reducing the punishment to 7 years, but the man still considered the punishment unfair.

The fact is that the court considered that he was detained not on March 9, but on March 10. This happened because on March 9 he was detained for committing an administrative offense, but on March 10 he was accused of a criminal offense, for which he was eventually convicted. Taking this into account, the court decided to consider March 10 as the first day of punishment. This did not give the convicted person peace, so the man decided not to stop there in the cassation instance and appealed to the Supreme Court. Having sorted out the case, the highest authority sided with the convicted person. Recently, the Supreme Court decided to consider March 9 as the first day of serving the sentence.
