Instead of blocking YouTube in Russia, measures should be taken to weaken its “hegemony,” Anton Gorelkin, deputy head of the State Duma committee on information policy, wrote on his Telegram channel.
“Instead of making it harder to access the video service, we need to work to weaken its hegemony. A good proposal was recently made by my friend Alexander Malkevich – to make traffic from Russian video services free, ”Gorelkin wrote. He also added that he believes that none of the Russians will have to use a VPN to watch content from YouTube.
Gorelkin sees the main problem in the use by Russians of VPN services, which are “used to steal personal data and personal information from users.” In his opinion, services created to bypass blocking are funded from the United States.
In July, Igor Ashmanov, member of the Council under the President of the Russian Federation for the development of civil society and human rights toldthat YouTube video hosting may be blocked in Russia by autumn. Ashmanov noted that blocking video hosting will become possible as soon as domestic analog platforms — RuTube and VK Video — are set up.
