The State Duma proposed to give the regions the right to create armed groups in martial law

The heads of regions during the period of martial law will be able to create formations to maintain order and help the security forces. This provision is written in amendmentapproved by the State Duma Defense Committee.

Legally, such formations will be formed as specialized state unitary enterprises. Among the tasks – the protection of order, the fight against saboteurs.

According to the amendments, the regions will have the right to receive small arms and ammunition for them from law enforcement agencies and transfer them to formed formations. Those employees of special GUPs who have the right to carry weapons will be armed.

It is proposed to allocate money to support such enterprises from the federal budget. Subjects will be able to additionally finance units from their own funds.

The amendment is planned to be considered at today’s plenary meeting of the State Duma immediately in the second and third readings, said the head of the Defense Committee Andrei Kartapolov, reports “Interfax“.

At the moment, martial law has been introduced in four new regions – the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. The proposed amendments will become effective in these regions immediately upon entry into force.

The same bill in the Russian Federation proposes expand military age limits. According to the amendments, from January 1, 2024, the age of conscription for military service will be from 18 to 30 years – there will be no transition period for raising the upper limit against the background of the “military-political situation”.
