The State Duma proposed to equalize marriage and family union – Kommersant

State Duma deputy Anton Tkachev proposed enshrining in law the concept of “family union” as equal to marriage. He sent an appeal to the head of the Ministry of Labor Anton Kotyakov.

“A number of citizens perceive the concept of “marriage” negatively, since in modern Russian the word “marriage” is also used in the meaning of “non-compliance with standards, defect,” says the appeal (available to Kommersant).

Anton Tkachev added that the phrase “family union” better reflects the essence of the institution of voluntary union and has an unambiguous positive connotation. After equating the concepts, citizens, according to the deputy, will have the opportunity to choose an official document.

When amendments are made to the family code, newlyweds will be able to decide for themselves which term will be spelled out in the documents. There is no need to change documents when choosing a “family union,” the deputy added.

Enshrining the new term in the law, according to Anton Tkachev, will become “a symbolic factor for protecting the family and strengthening traditional family values.” He explained the feasibility of the proposal by the fact that 2024 has been declared the year of the family – a corresponding decree from Russian President Vladimir Putin signed November 22.

In October, the State Duma also discussed the introduction of the subject of family studies into the school curriculum. Representative of the Ministry of Education Anna Timofeeva reported at the meeting on changes that relate to traditional family values ​​in the standards of programs on the environment, music, art, Russian language, literature and social studies.
