The State Duma Committee on Youth Policy has developed a bill that will limit the mention in the media and the Internet of information about school attackers, said committee chairman Artem Metelev. In the near future, the document will be sent to the government for review.

“The idea of the head of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, to limit the dissemination of information about the criminals who attacked schools is worthy of attention. I completely agree with him. And I propose to support the legislative initiative, it has been prepared, we will now send it to the government and the Ministry of Education,” Mr. Metelev said at a hearing in the State Duma (quoted from RIA Novosti).

As Artem Metelev explained, the list of information, the distribution of which will be limited in the media and the Internet, will include information about the biography of the school attacker, the reasons for the crime he committed and the details of his life. He noted that Russian legislation already has a similar rule regarding terrorists and rapists.

The Chairman of the Investigative Committee made a proposal to ban information about those who carried out shootings in educational institutions in June 2023. As an argument, Alexander Bastrykin indicated, that an analysis of several cases of attacks on schools showed that they had a “wave nature.” He said the attacks were prompted by past episodes that were widely reported in the media, which in turn led to an increase in members and followers of groups devoted to the topic.
