The law amends articles 207.3 (fakes about the RF Armed Forces) and 280.3 (discrediting the RF Armed Forces) of the RF Criminal Code. These articles will also cover fakes and discrediting organizations and individuals that help the Russian army carry out combat missions. The amendments also toughen the punishment from five to seven years for disseminating false information and re-discrediting if it led to death or riots. The maximum punishment for fake news about the military or volunteers will remain the same – up to 15 years in prison.

In addition, administrative punishment is introduced for discrediting formations and individuals performing combat missions on behalf of the Ministry of Defense, in Art. 20.3.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. For individuals, the maximum fine will be 50 thousand rubles, for legal entities – 500 thousand rubles.
