The State Duma adopted in the first reading bills on tougher punishment for violations in the activities of a foreign agent

The State Duma in the first reading clarified the responsibility for violating the law on foreign agents. Changes are being made to the Criminal Code and the Code of Administrative Offenses (CAO).
The bills take into account a greater number of cases when there is a basis for holding foreign agents liable, declared co-author of the amendments, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption Vasily Piskarev (United Russia).
After the adoption of two bills, the malicious evasion of foreign agents from the performance of their duties may result in a punishment of up to two years in prison. Articles of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation provide fines in the amount of 2 thousand to 1 million rubles.
A foreign agent, according to the law, is an individual or legal entity that receives funding from abroad and participates in political activities. The Ministry of Justice maintains registers of NPOs-foreign agents, media-foreign agents and individuals-foreign agents. The authorities impose a number of requirements and restrictions on their work.
