The State Duma adopted in the first reading bill, clarifying the provisions of the law on presidential elections in the Russian Federation. The initiative was introduced in October by a group of United Russia parliamentarians led by Senator Andrei Klishas and Deputy Pavel Krasheninnikov.
The draft law assumes, among other things, that regional and municipal authorities will be able to allocate money from their budgets to pay members of election commissions and inform voters. In addition, only accredited media representatives and observers will be allowed to take photographs and videos at the sites. State Duma Committee on State Construction and Legislation named the initiative is “reasonable and timely.”
The presidential elections in the Russian Federation are planned for March 17, 2024, and the Federation Council will adopt a resolution on their appointment 90–100 days before this date. Accordingly, amendments to the law must be adopted before the start of the presidential campaign.
