At the plenary session, the State Duma adopted in the third reading a bill aimed at banning the trade in animals in pet stores and “bird markets”.
New amendments will be made to the law on the responsible treatment of animals.
The law will spell out the requirements for places used for animal trade.
The author of the document, the first deputy head of the State Duma Committee on Ecology, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, Vladimir Burmatov, explained that the requirements prescribed in the legislative novel would actually mean a ban on such trade in pet stores and bird markets.
The speaker of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin also spoke about the new law. He explained that in pet stores and bird markets, animals are often kept in unacceptable conditions. He is sure that this should be excluded.
The new rules will come into effect on March 1 next year.
