Corriere della Sera: US State Department called Uss’s escape Russia’s violation of Italy’s sovereignty
The US State Department said that the escape from house arrest of the son of the ex-governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, businessman Artem Uss, is a “gross violation” of Italy’s sovereignty by Russia, writes Corriere della Sera.
A State Department spokeswoman told an Italian newspaper correspondent in Washington: “This is Russia, which grossly violates the country’s sovereignty.” The official declined to “comment too much”, explaining that “the Italians are still investigating”, she expressed her hope that Italy “is assessing all available means in response to what happened”.
The representative of the State Department called the story of Artem Uss “a very unfortunate incident.” She also stated that she was satisfied that the property of the businessman had previously been frozen and that it was proposed to impose EU sanctions against him.
The decree on the freezing of Ussa’s assets was signed last week by Italian Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti. It was reported that this is a small villa and other assets worth about 160 thousand euros.
In March, Artem Uss, previously detained in Italy, escaped from house arrest. To do this, he cut off an electronic bracelet from his leg. The day before, a court in Milan decided to extradite him to the United States.
