“The sound of a lawn mower”: Muscovites revealed their reaction to Ukrainian drones

Since mid-August, almost every night, Moscow and its environs have been subjected to terrorist attacks by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). So, on the night of August 22-23, one drone was shot down in Khimki, and another managed to get to the Moscow City building under construction. A significant part of Moscow and the region has already fallen into the zone of overflights and falls of drones. How the inhabitants of the metropolis adapt to the new reality – MK found out.
“I heard this thing flying at night,” admits Natalya K., a resident of Kuusinen Street. “The sound was like a lawn mower, only a little louder. It was scary, especially when after a while there was a distant “boom”: it means that the drone flew to the “City”. But what to do – went back to sleep.
Many Muscovites have already heard the sound of dangerous “lawn mowers” – some have even observed them, although most attacks occur at night or very early in the morning. “I saw a drone about two weeks ago, I immediately remembered a ditty – bullshit flew over the ground of silver metal,” says Konstantin, a resident of Yuzhny Chertanovo. According to him, this object “live” is hardly perceived as a danger: the device is slow-moving, the sounds it makes are not threatening. Nothing like the images of threats from the air that we are used to from the movies.
“Perhaps, by the way, this is one of the secrets of terrorist drones,” psychologist Elena Levko suggests. – If the object does not look threatening, it is more likely to be missed and not noticed. Remember, by the way, what the famous Matthias Rust flew on: a small, slow-moving sports plane that did not inspire any air defense fears. The threat is recognized too slowly when the UAV is already over the target.
Residents of dacha cooperatives in the Kubinka area (there are almost more flights and even arrivals of enemy UAVs than in other areas of the Moscow region) confirmed to MK that the sound of a piston engine has become familiar to them – and it sounds less threatening than takeoffs / landings military equipment to the military airfield of the same name. “We are calm,” said the interlocutor of MK, who lives in the area. “I watched this thing buzzing over their heads, and the neighbors calmly tell the children what a drone is, how it is controlled …”
What does not seem to be there is panic and the desire to “escape at least somewhere from all this.” The owners of dachas in the Kubinka district interviewed by MK reported that none of the neighbors had left their dachas and were not selling their property. On the contrary, some of the plots that had been “in the cast” for several years now have owners, and construction has begun.
“It’s pointless to be afraid, it can fly anywhere,” says Aleksey, the owner of a dacha in the Serpukhov district, who has watched overflights of enemy UAVs many times. “Moreover, any sensible aircraft modeller can do something like this on his knee: a high-speed piston motor, a control controller … So at least he can fly in Kostroma. And run, by the way, too.
What has increased is vigilance. As MK was told in the police department of the Taldomsky district of the Moscow region, citizens who observe aircraft-type UAVs in the sky regularly call the police. A description of the object follows: large, high-flying, piston engine. The police invariably reassure people: a standard test track for domestic UAVs passes over the area.
“Neighbors asked me not to fly temporarily, because everyone is nervous,” the owner of a paraglider from the Yaroslavl region told MK. – The sound of the motor is the same, I’m flying low, but as long as I can’t be seen directly above my head, people are worried.
As for city apartments located near Moscow City, the owners are in no hurry to get rid of them. “It’s a matter of chance, they also arrived on Leninsky Prospekt at the beginning of summer, and they are far from City,” the owner of an apartment in a renovated new building on Shelepikha shares with MK. However, she herself does not live in the apartment – she rents it out to people who work in skyscrapers.
– Expect some kind of market reaction only after a few months of constant threat – commented “MK” in one of the major real estate agencies in Moscow. While people are waiting for things to get better. But even if the threats do not stop, we do not expect prices to fall: the risks are distributed evenly throughout Moscow and the Moscow region. There are no absolutely safe places – and at the same time, the danger is statistically not too high.
In other words, those who want to buy an apartment near the City or a dacha in the west of the Moscow region at a huge discount still remain “with their own people” – the residents of these prestigious areas do not intend to give up. In the end, people live in Israel, where the command “air!” For many years, it has become commonplace in many areas. It’s a well-known fact: what you can’t change, you just have to accept.
