The State Duma continues to search for solutions to demographic problems. Deputy Nina Ostanina again said that, under the auspices of the State Duma Committee on Family, Women and Children, a separate school course in family studies is being developed, designed to strengthen family values or improve childbearing. And a unified textbook on the family science course is being written jointly with the Ministry of Education.
Thus, the matter will not be limited to the new module in the subject of social studies for high school, which was announced the other day. Let us remind you that the Ministry of Education also announced the other day about a module for eleventh graders, which will include knowledge about family and marriage. The deputy minister said that the new section will include “issues related to the moral and legal aspects of the family as the most important social institution of Russian society.”
“Family studies” in social studies has been developed since 2021. All this time, there was a public and expert discussion among parents, RAO departments, social activists and the Russian Orthodox Church. The Church actively lobbied for such paragraphs as “Headship of the husband” and “Hierarchy of the family.” But, be that as it may, social studies has now been enriched with a new section on the family only in high school.
It turned out that primary schoolchildren and early puberty teenagers are not covered by knowledge about their future family life. But “this is a big science,” notes Ostanina. And she says that she sees the new school subject as “one of the tools that prepare young people for future family life.” For example, knowing your grandparents, great-grandmothers. Those same family values that “have such an impact on children”…
However, not by a single spirit-lifting force. Ostanina says that the new textbook will contain legal issues of family law. Describe what marriage means and how it differs from simply cohabitation. What responsibility comes after the young people leave the registry office. And even – this has not been discussed before – it may contain information about protection against unwanted pregnancy. And about psychology: “the ability to find compromises in family life,” etc.
The idea of a new school course on family science has been in the air and at Duma meetings since the spring of this year. At first, the project was considered only from the standpoint of bonds and traditional values. And it was more reminiscent of the family science that was introduced in schools in several regions since 2017, in the Samara region, for example. This is perhaps the most conservative option for presenting such a course, mainly based on the textbook “Moral Foundations of Family Life”, developed in the Russian Orthodox Church. This textbook was written by nun Nina Krygina and priest Dmitry Moiseev and at one time caused a lot of noise.
The textbook states that “men are more often born geniuses,” and girls at the age of 13 “do not have specialization of the hemispheres (brain).” The work contains discussions about the “soul of the zygote,” about how “contraception kills love,” making it “sterile, imaginary.” Abortion is murder, and you also have to give birth to sick children – doctors will then “straighten them out.” “Church” advice was given about family relationships: “A loving wife should not skimp on praise for her husband,” and “A husband, even if he knows that his wife is a thousand times right, will still stand his ground – wise women understand that they need to give in.” …
As for the textbook, which is currently being developed for the school course “Family Studies” under the patronage of the Duma specialized committee and the working commission created under it, it is being written at the Institute for the Study of Childhood, Family and Education of the Russian Academy of Education.
As the director of the institute, Natalya Agre, previously told MK, “the development of methodological materials” will last until 2024, and the “testing of methodological materials” will last until 2025. That is, “Family Studies” in school probably won’t be expected until 2026-2027.
Therefore, for now, social activists and deputies are talking about their vision of “Family Studies”. Sergei Rybalchenko, a member of the Russian Presidential Council for the Implementation of State Policy in the Sphere of Protection of Family and Children, says that “Christianity originated in our family,” hinting at Prince Vladimir’s wife Anna of Byzantium (who was taken prisoner by the prince as a war trophy). First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Family, Women and Children Tatyana Butskaya – that the study of the family can leave the rigid framework of the discipline and be “integrated into every subject.” Well, for example, in mathematics you can learn how to plan a family budget, etc.
And the main locomotive of school “family studies” Nina Ostanina is about how to save the country, that is, to raise the demographics. The general idea is “everything needs to be done” in order to “encourage the girl to keep the child and so that she has confidence that she will not be left alone with her problems.” Where in this construction the father-patriarch or at least some man who conceived this child is not reported.
