The former president of the USSR and Russian Equestrian Federation, the son of Marshal Semyon Budyonny, Mikhail, died at the age of 79. The Equestrian Federation reported this. The cause of death is unknown.
“It is with regret that we announce the death of the ex-president of the Equestrian Federation of the USSR and Russia, Mikhail Semenovich Budyonny. A passionate equestrian and talented manager, he supported the development of equestrian disciplines in the most difficult years for the country and promoted the performance of Russian athletes on the world stage,” says a statement on the federation’s website.
Mikhail Budyonny is one of the two sons of Marshal of the USSR, commander of the 1st Cavalry Army of the Red Army during the Civil War, Semyon Budyonny. The first son, Sergei, was a colonel in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces, and died at the age of 55. Mikhail Budyonny graduated from the Moscow Energy Institute, and then worked for the USSR Foreign Trade. He headed the Equestrian Federation from 1984 to 1993, then became its president.
In total, Semyon Budyonny has two sons and one daughter – all from his third wife Maria – and four grandchildren. The granddaughter of Marshal Anastasia Budennaya was the first wife of the Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov. The marshal’s first wife, a Cossack woman named Nadezhda, accidentally shot herself, and the second, opera singer Olga, was arrested by the NKVD on charges of espionage and attempting to poison the marshal (released after Stalin’s death). During her imprisonment, Semyon Budyonny married her cousin Maria.
