How to keep your Christmas tree fresh

In Moscow, there are special bazaars for lovers of live Christmas trees. The tree can also be bought in garden shops and even supermarkets. However, there are a number of small tricks in buying a Christmas tree (fir, pine) and caring for it – if you know them, you can stretch the New Year’s mood for at least a month. “MK” asked dendrologists and old Muscovites about these tricks.

On what day is it better to buy a Christmas tree – in advance or just before the holiday? Sergei Omelekhin, an employee of a Christmas tree wholesale company, told MK that in terms of prices for Christmas trees, there is not much difference when to buy them. Prices for this product practically do not change depending on the date. However, closer to the holiday, the choice narrows, including the sale may not be the most affordable options.

The optimal purchase time depends on the humidity in your apartment,

– All Christmas trees are stored in the open air, at temperatures, therefore, around zero or minus, – says Omelekhin. – For a felled tree, these are good conditions. When it enters the apartment, under a temperature of plus 20 or more, it begins to dry. It needs to be watered, and if your apartment is very dry, then it is better to buy a Christmas tree just before the New Year. And if everything is in order with humidity, then it is possible earlier.

To put a New Year tree in order for it to live longer, you need to put it in a bucket or a special Christmas tree stand in the form of a bucket with latches. One way or another, the container must be filled with water and regularly maintain its level.

“The Christmas tree drinks a couple of liters of water a day,” says Galina Gurko, a pensioner from the Sokol district. – Every day I pour from a bottle with a long neck. If you do not forget to do this and choose the right Christmas tree, it will last until February.

Needles do not need to be processed in any way, – the interlocutor of MK explained, – yes, after the Christmas tree is dressed up, this is impossible. But the needles are an indicator of the dryness of the Christmas tree: as soon as they begin to crumble at the slightest touch, the tree must be discharged and carried for recycling.

And most importantly: when the tree is very dry (stopped “drinking”), it is no longer possible to turn on the electric garland on it, especially the old one. Fire safety comes first.
