Precedents for self-dissolution
Nagorno-Karabakh became the first in the modern history of the post-Soviet space and the third large unrecognized state entity in the world to decide to dissolve itself. Similar processes occurred in the territory of the former Yugoslavia after the liquidation of the Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK) in 1996–1998. in Croatia and in 2008 in Sri Lanka. In the first case, two Croat military operations in 1995, which UN peacekeepers could not prevent, led to self-dissolution, and the liquidation of the RSK led to the flight of about 250,000 ethnic Serbs. The separatist republic of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka also ceased to exist after the military operation of the government, its armed forces laid down their arms.
