In an interview with RBC-Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences, nuclear physicist Vladimir Borisenko said that there is currently no radioactive iodine at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, since the station’s units are not functioning. Therefore, he noted that it is not necessary to drink potassium iodide for the purpose of prevention.
He explained that iodine accumulates only when the nuclear power plant is operating and has a half-life of eight days. This means that in a month its concentration will decrease by four times, and in two months – by 16 times. In a year, the concentration of iodine will decrease by several billion times.
“If we are talking about iodine, there were such conversations that supposedly it should be drunk, and so there is no iodine at the Zaporozhye station today,” he explained.
