Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will pass at its minimum distance from Earth on February 1, 2023. The celestial body discovered last year can be seen with the naked eye on the territory of Russia.
According to the Moscow Planetarium, the brightness of the comet can be +5 – +4 magnitude. The length of its tail reaches more than 10 °, it is comparable to the “bucket” of the constellation Ursa Major.
“This means that in the absence of urban illumination, it can even be seen with the naked eye, especially since it will have excellent visibility conditions for our country and all countries of the northern hemisphere,” the message says.
Now the comet is moving through the inner region of the solar system. It reached its closest point to the luminary on January 12. At the minimum distance from the Earth, it will be on February 1.
Our planet with a celestial body will be separated by “only” 42 million kilometers. This is less than a third of the distance from the Earth to the Sun. The comet will pass between the constellation Ursa Major and the North Star.
