The Russians have found a way to turn cemeteries into birch groves

A new invention by Russian specialists will allow turning new cemeteries into oak forests, birch and spruce groves. Recently, their invention, a biodegradable urn for ashes, was protected by a patent of the Russian Federation.

The urn developed by the Russians consists of two containers inserted into one another. The outer one, intended for ashes, is made of cellulose-containing material (brown wood pulp, cotton, straw). Such a vessel can be given any shape. The smaller inner vessel is made of pressed peat; soil mixed with a nutrient substrate is placed in it (an option is a mixture of perlite and vermiculite minerals). Seeds or seedlings of plants, such as oaks or pine trees, are placed in the soil.

Soon after the burial of such an urn, the inner vessel decomposes, while the peat serves as an additional source of nutrition for the young plant. The cellulose-containing material of the outer shell takes longer to decompose, and in the first months of plant development, when it is most vulnerable, it serves to protect the root system from pests and weeds. The grown tree becomes not just an environmentally friendly tombstone; in fact, the ashes of the deceased become part of it. In addition, the burial method itself is more environmentally friendly, since a decomposing urn with ashes not only does not pollute the soil, but, on the contrary, makes it more fertile.
