The job search service Rabota.ru and the Chitay-gorod bookstore chain found out in the course of a survey what and why Russians read, and at the same time, which of the characters they would like to be. The results of the study were studied in detail “Gazeta.Ru”.
As far as work or even a kind of life role is concerned, the situation turned out to be the following.
A third of the survey participants (33%) admitted that they would like to be Sherlock Holmes. A quarter (24%) would like to live the life of the traveler Phileas Fogg from Jules Verne’s book Around the World in 80 Days. A fifth (20%) even finds the idea of being writers attractive, like the Master in Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita. Further, with a result of 10-11%, in a kind of rating, there are fans of Dr. Aibolit and the characters of the Harry Potter books. Stirlitz is unrivaled in this group: the scout hero, invented by Yulian Semenov, led an interesting life, according to 14% of the study participants. Among the exotic options that scored a few percent are the Mad Hatter, Uncle Styopa – a policeman, Tatsu – a former yakuza boss, and even an unpleasant British citizen Dorian Gray.
However, the study also yielded a number of results that are interesting from the point of view, rather, of social psychology, not related to books as such. For example, it turned out that 23% of respondents try on the role of book characters because they want to see their resemblance to the character. But the other 19% do not give in to the power of such delusions, but simply would like to escape from reality to another world.
And yes, 16% admit that they would just like to change jobs. And, apparently, therefore, they are very interested in describing the realities of professions unknown to them.
