Archpriest Nikolai Balashov, an adviser to Patriarch Kirill, said that the registration of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra to the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church has not been cancelled. So he commented on what was said earlier approval of a representative of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine loyal to Kyivthat the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra became part of the OCU.
Explanations also appear in Telegram channel “Country Politics”, where it was reported that the Lavra does not automatically come under the control of the OCU, and this requires a decision of the Ukrainian government. As emphasized, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky recently announced the need for a Cabinet decision.
It is also specified that the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is divided into two parts: the Lower Lavra, which includes 85 percent of the territory and which was leased to the UOC for 50 years in 2013, and the Upper Lavra, where the Assumption Cathedral is located and which remains under the jurisdiction of the National Kiev-Pechersk historical and cultural reserve.
