There are now dozens of military chaplains in the war zone in Ukraine. The ROC believes that this number of chaplains is not enough. The status of Russian military chaplains and the list of social guarantees laid down by them are still not finally determined.
Chaplain – a clergyman who combines dignity with any other position. Often the activities of chaplains are connected precisely with military affairs – priests in the army control the morale of the soldiers, bury the dead, and also contribute to the evacuation of the wounded and deceased military personnel.
“Since military priests are sent to the special military operation zone on business trips, it is difficult to give an exact number. We are talking about dozens of chaplains, but, of course, this is not enough. And the Synodal Department for Cooperation with the Armed Forces is working to increase the number of military priests and finalize their status, social guarantees, and so on,” Vladimir Legoyda, chairman of the ROC Synodal Department for Church Relations with Society and the Media, told RIA Novosti.
On the problem of coordinating the status of military priests in the combat zone in Ukraine in the Russian Orthodox Church declared back in May 2022. Then the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Orthodox Church, Bishop Savva (Tutunov) of Zelenograd, said that the chaplains did not have the authority to fully support the army.
