Today, December 12, the Russian Jewish Congress (RJC) held a charity evening called “The Miracle of Hanukkah”. This year, the holiday is celebrated from the evening of December 18th. On December 12, the leadership of the RJC opened the evening in the synagogue on Poklonnaya Hill. “This is a charity evening dedicated to the Hanukkah miracle,” RJC official representative Mikhail Savin told Kommersant. “We are also organizing the miracle itself for children from low-income families all over Russia: we will collect donations for Hanukkah gifts that are useful for them — laptops.”
According to Mr. Savin, the RJC plans to raise 1 million 250 thousand rubles. “This is enough to buy 50 laptops, with their help, the wards of our charity programs will be able to participate in the RJC online educational project and successfully prepare for the State Examination and the Unified State Exam,” Mr. Savin explained. “In order to have time to buy these gifts for them, we are holding our event the week before Hanukkah.
Among those invited to the charity evening were: TV presenter Vladislav Flyarkovsky, president of JSC “Medicina” academician Grigory Roitberg, economists and political scientists Yevgeny Gontmakher and Mark Urnov, actress Yulia Rutberg, director Iosif Reichelgauz, co-chairman of the Holocaust research and educational center Alla Gerber and singer Maria Katz. The evening was hosted by Kira Altman. The guests acted as readers with stories about the Hanukkah miracle – for example, Mr. Reichelgauz read an excerpt from his work “Protocols of Zion Nurses”, Mrs. Rutberg read the parables “To See or Believe” and “About the Most Beautiful Woman”, and Mr. Flyarkovsky read the parable “In pursuit of life.” The charity evening ended with a buffet reception and a performance by jazz singer Alexandra Magerova.
