In accordance with the decision of the Russian government, the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga will be sold to the Avilon car dealer holding. The Vedomosti newspaper published this information, citing sources in the Cabinet of Ministers.
An Avilon representative declined to comment on a possible deal with Volkswagen. The representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade also did not answer the newspaper’s questions. However, a source familiar with the plans of the Chinese company Chery said that Avilon is also negotiating a possible production partnership in Kaluga with the Chinese automaker.
In March 2022, the Arbitration Court of the Nizhny Novgorod Region arrested Volkswagen assets in Russia following a GAZ lawsuit in the amount of more than 15.5 billion rubles. Interim measures have been imposed to prevent Volkswagen from leaving the country until the situation is resolved. However, on April 3, 2023, the court partially granted the petition of Volkswagen Group Rus, canceling the arrest on real estate, production equipment and other movable property of the company.
The plant in Kaluga produced such car models as the Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Rapid. Volkswagen suspended production at the plant in March 2022.
