Russian Foreign Ministry: demolition of the monument to Ukrainian Nazis in Canada is a step towards eliminating their legacy
The demolition of the monument to the SS Galicia division in Canada is the first step towards the complete elimination of the legacy of the Ukrainian Nazis in this country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. RIA Novosti reports this.
Earlier, videos appeared on social networks showing the process of destroying a monument in a cemetery in Oakville, near Toronto. The monument was created in honor of the SS Galicia division, which consisted of Ukrainian nationalists and fought against the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Russian diplomats have been calling for the removal of this monument, as well as other similar structures, for a long period.
“The demolition of the monument to the SS men in Canada was the first step towards eliminating the legacy of the Ukrainian Nazis in this country,” the statement said.
At the same time, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that if the Canadian authorities demolish other similar monuments, this will prove the seriousness of their focus on getting rid of Ukraine’s Nazi past.
The demolished monument in the city of Oakville was built in 1988. The initiators of its destruction were the Jewish community of Canada. At the same time, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton stated that the monument was disgusting to him, but the legislation did not allow it to be demolished.
The SS division “Galicia” was staffed by Ukrainians and actively participated in punitive operations. In July 1944, the division was defeated by advancing Soviet troops near Brody, and those who escaped surrendered to Anglo-American troops. At the same time, the “Galicia” military personnel managed to avoid extradition to the USSR.
