Zimbabwean authorities deport US officials over lithium
The leadership of Zimbabwe decided to expel the mission of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) from the country. The country’s authorities suspected them of unscrupulous purposes.
According to the agreements, the USAID mission was supposed to help develop democracy in the country and, for this purpose, assessed the development and governance of the African country. But the Zimbabwean authorities believed that the Americans’ true goal was different.
Recently, the African government introduced a ban on the export of raw lithium, which is used in the military-industrial complex and in the production of batteries. Zimbabwe is one of the world leaders in its reserves. According to the country’s leadership, it was the American guests who attempted to establish control over these deposits.
US representatives were very unhappy with the decision of the Zimbabwean authorities. According to State Department officials, American officials were interrogated, deported at night and, in addition, they were threatened. Washington promised to continue working to build a democratic society in Zimbabwe and added that the people of this country deserve better.
