The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zakharova, commented on the information that killer whales were blocked in the ice off the coast of Hokkaido.

In her Telegram channel, the speaker of the Russian Foreign Ministry referred to an expert opinion that animals can be rescued if a hole is cleared using an ice-class vessel – not necessarily an icebreaker. Oceanologist from Moscow State University Sergei Mukhametov emphasized that such measures must be taken in the coming hours, otherwise “it’s a pity for the killer whales.”

Zakharova recalled that Japan has such a vessel, but, according to Japanese journalists, local authorities assured that there was no way to save the killer whales.

A representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry asked where the representatives of environmental and animal protection “miracle organizations” were, and also asked why they “don’t sound the alarm.”

Earlier it became known that 12 Red Book killer whales fell into a trap in Japanese territorial waters – they cannot go out into open water. Not only adults, but also calves were caught in the ice, and one of them was clearly feeling unwell. Meteorologists’ forecasts do not promise weather conditions in the coming days that would help killer whales escape from captivity in the ice.
