The President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov believes that sanctions against Russian athletes will be lifted before the start of the Summer Olympic Games in 2028. According to him, performing at competitions in the USA is one of the goals for athletes from Russia.
“Our goal is to perform in the USA. I am sure that by that time the sanctions will be lifted and the attitude towards us will change. It is already changing,” Mr. Pozdnyakov said at the plenary session of the “Russia – Sports Power” forum in Perm (quoted by TASS). The Olympic Games in Los Angeles will be held from July 14 to 30, 2028.
In March 2022, following the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that athletes from Russia and Belarus be barred from international tournaments. A year later the I.O.C. recommended federations to allow Russians and Belarusians to compete if they maintain a neutral status. It is assumed that in this status they will be able to participate in the Olympics in 2024.
