The 1963 story “The Far Rainbow” was written under the impression of watching the film by American director Stanley Kramer “On the Last Shore” (1959). The theme is the consequences of a nuclear catastrophe. The Strugatskys decided to create their own version of a work about the responsibility of scientists to humanity, and about what happens when the “genie” of scientific experiments breaks free.
Time of action – the beginning of the XXIII century. The scene of action is the planet Rainbow, which is also called the “planet of physicists.” During the experiments of scientists, an energy Wave invariably forms on the surface of the Rainbow, which usually can be contained with the help of special devices. But one day the situation gets out of control. People understand that a giant Wave will very quickly destroy all life on the Rainbow …
Andrei Goncharov: “In the distant future invented by the Strugatskys, human life is devoid of preconditions for conflict situations. There are no monetary relations on the planet Rainbow, there are no religious directions, there are no political borders and a person’s belonging to a certain citizenship. And most importantly, people of the future can do what they love and believe in. They realize their creative potential in science, art, pedagogy – they have the opportunity to be “genuinely happy people.” At the same time, it turns out that they still missed something very important when building their ideal society. Since in the end everything comes to a catastrophe, which the people of the future initiate with their own hands. What did the people of the future not take into account, what were they not attentive enough to?
