MISIS named the top 3 scientific discoveries in 2023

The year 2023 was rich in scientific discoveries, the main of which were in mathematics, physics, genetics, and medicine, the rector of MISIS University Alevtina Chernikova told Sputnik.

MISIS is one of the leading Russian universities, included in the TOP 500 best universities in the world according to the global QS World University Rankings, and in the top 5 best universities in Russia. His specialization is materials science, metallurgy, mining, quantum technologies, biomaterials and bioengineering, alternative energy, additive and information technologies, and space.

“In 2023, there were many discoveries in various fields of scientific knowledge – from mathematics and biology to quantum physics and bioengineering,” Chernikova said. In her opinion, the top 3 world scientific inventions included the creation of a molecule in a state of quantum entanglement, which was achieved by scientists from Princeton University in the USA. “This has important implications in areas such as quantum information processing, quantum modeling, quantum sensing,” she said.

She called another discovery the work of an international group of scientists with the participation of representatives of the Russian Federation to study the human Y chromosome; for the first time, the Y chromosome was completely sequenced, and the gaps in its sequence were filled). She named the creation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology of an elastic copy of the heart, printed on a 3D printer, as the third scientific achievement.

Chernikova also noted the significant achievements of Chinese science.

“The rapid development of the PRC economy is largely the merit of Chinese scientists. One of the most striking Chinese developments of 2023 is a prototype device for contactless movement of objects in space using magnetic force,” she said.

The rector of MISIS emphasized that her university actively cooperates with China – Harbin Polytechnic University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Tsinghua University and others.

“Recently, a team of NUST MISIS scientists and Chinese colleagues conducted a joint experiment on transmitting messages between Russia and China protected using quantum cryptography. We are ready to expand cooperation in the field of science and education with China,” she said.

Among MISIS’s own scientific achievements in 2023, she noted the creation of a “gun” for “stitching” wounds and soft tissues, the first Russian superconducting quantum processor, and a solar battery with perovskite photomodules. According to Chernikova, in 2024 her university will work in such areas as “Quantum Internet”, “Biomedical materials and bioengineering”, “Materials of the future”, “Technologies for sustainable development”, “Digital business”, and in each of the directions expected significant discoveries and developments.
