A record for the simultaneous presence of people in Earth’s orbit has been set
After the launch of the Chinese spacecraft Shenzhou-16, a record was set for the number of people simultaneously orbiting the Earth – their number reached 17.
The previous record was set on September 16, 2021. Then 14 people gathered in orbit at the same time. And before that, the record held for a quarter of a century. In March 1995, 13 people were in orbit at the same time.
The Shenzhou-16 spacecraft was launched on the Changzheng-2 rocket, on which a crew of three Chinese cosmonauts flies to the Tiangong orbital station, where three compatriots are already located. The crew of the arriving ship included Commander Jing Haipeng, as well as Gui Haichao and Zhu Yangzhu. Deng Qingming, Fei Junlong and Zhang Lu were waiting for them on the Tiangong.
The crews of the Russian Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft, the American Crew Dragon, as well as the crew of the Axiom Space AX-2 private mission are currently on the ISS. Only 11 people.
The Soyuz MS-23 crew includes Russians Dmitry Petelin, Sergei Prokopiev and US representative Frank Rubio. Crew-6: Steven Bowen, Woody Hoburgh (both US), Andrey Fedyaev (Russia) and Sultan Al-Neyadi (UAE). The private mission is headed by veteran spaceflight Peggy Whitson (USA). She was accompanied by racing driver and entrepreneur John Schoffner, as well as representatives of Saudi Arabia – Ali al-Karni and the first Arab woman astronaut Ryan Barnawi.
