China’s launch of Shenzhou 16 sets new record for number of people in Earth’s orbit

After launch China’s Shenzhou-16 manned spacecraft set a new record for the number of people in Earth’s orbit, RIA Novosti drew attention. There are currently 17 people in orbit at the same time.
Start was produced from the Jiuquan Cosmodrome in northwest China using the Long March-2-ef carrier rocket at 09:31 local time (04:41 Moscow time). On board the Shenzhou-16, en route to its Tiangong orbital station, there were three astronauts: Jing Haipeng, Gui Haichao and Zhu Yangzhu. They will spend five months at the station.
There are also six other Chinese, three Russians, five Americans, two people from Saudi Arabia and one from the United Arab Emirates currently orbiting the Earth. However, as RIA Novosti notes, the record number of people in orbit will not remain for long. This evening, the crew of the private mission AX-2, which launched on the night of May 21-22, is expected to return.
According to the agency, the previous record for the number of people in orbit was set on September 16, 2021. Then 14 people were present in orbit at the same time. Prior to this, the record was set in 1995, when 13 people were in orbit.
