SMR: Women sleep worse than men due to unstable circadian rhythms

Scientists from the universities of Harvard, Stanford (USA) and Southampton (UK) found that women may experience sleep problems due to less stable circadian rhythms compared to men. Research published in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews (SMR), presented an analysis of previously published scientific papers on sleep quality in both sexes. After studying several dozen studies, it was found that women suffer from insomnia almost 60% more often than men, and often complain of a deterioration in the quality of night’s rest.

Further analysis showed that differences in sleep quality were due to differences in circadian rhythms between men and women. Women start producing melatonin (the sleep hormone) earlier and their body temperature rises earlier in the evening. Scientists noted that women are five times more likely to have circadian rhythm disturbances than men, which can lead to difficulty sleeping and staying awake.

Researchers have warned that ignoring the body’s natural signals about sleep and wake times can worsen circadian rhythms, increase sleep problems and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and dementia.
