The state prosecutor requested 250 hours of compulsory work for the former security guard Alexander Vasiliev, who painted eyes in the painting by Malevich’s student Anna Leporskaya “Three Figures” at the exhibition at the Yeltsin Center. The prosecutor’s office asked the court to find him guilty of vandalism (part 1 of article 214 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Verkh-Isetsky District Court of Yekaterinburg will announce the verdict on August 29.
During the meeting today, August 26, a video recording of the episode was shown when Alexander Vasiliev painted eyes in the picture. Previously he declaredthat teenagers encouraged him to do it. “When I passed by, I heard the conversation of visitors who said that the picture lacks eyes,” he also noted in court. However, the recording shows that Alexander Vasilyev is standing alone. According to him, by that time the young people had already left.
Incident happened in December 2021 at an exhibition at the Yeltsin Center in Yekaterinburg. The police opened a case on the fact of vandalism (part 1 of article 214 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The painting by Anna Leporskaya is included in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery. Its cost is 75 million rubles. The damage from the actions of Alexander Vasiliev was estimated at 250 thousand rubles. The insurance company has already paid this amount to the Tretyakov Gallery. However, its representatives refused apply to the court with a motion to dismiss the criminal case.
Alexander Vasiliev pleaded guilty, but stated that he did not want to spoil the picture. In his opinion, he made the picture more beautiful. Lawyer Aleksey Bushmakov considers the requested punishment too severe and unenforceable due to the age and state of health of Alexander Vasiliev. “The state prosecutor himself read that he had a whole bunch of incurable diseases. Plus mental status,” said the lawyer. It should be noted that during the trial, the prosecutor stated that, according to the expert, Alexander Vasiliev needs compulsory treatment by a psychiatrist. The defendant himself agrees that he needs treatment.
