The Easter service in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is conducted by the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev. The head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) holds a divine service in St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral.
The main site on Easter for the UOC was the Exaltation of the Cross Church of the Lavra. The event is attended by the manager of the affairs of the church, Metropolitan Anthony. According to Strana.ua, several hundred people gathered in the temple. Some could not get inside and stayed outside to pray despite the rain.
The OCU previously also announced an Easter service in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, but in the Assumption Cathedral. However, as Strana.ua writes, there was no one in the cathedral late at night, several priests of the OCU told the publication that it would be closed at 23:00.
Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is one of the main Orthodox shrines. Founded in 1051. In the spring, the Ukrainian authorities demanded that the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate leave the Lavra, where the residence of Metropolitan Onufry of Kyiv and All Ukraine is located. The Lavra is expected to come under the control of the OCU, which Moscow calls “schismatic”.
