Polish President Andrzej Duda instructed Mateusz Morawiecki to form a new government, reported radio RMF24.
During a ceremony at the presidential palace, the head of the republic said that the last eight years have been “good for Poland.” According to him, “the vast majority of commitments have been fulfilled” and these were “important commitments.”
Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki resigned along with his cabinet after parliamentary elections. Within 14 days of his appointment, the prime minister submits to the Sejm (lower house of parliament) a program of government action, together with a proposal for a vote of confidence.
The representative of the Polish opposition, Szymon Gołownia, became the Marshal of the Sejm (chairman of the lower house of the Polish parliament). He was supported by 265 deputies, the radio reported. His opponent was Elzbieta Witek from the Law and Justice party. 193 people voted for her. Golovnia will lead the lower house of parliament until July 13, 2025. According to the agreement between the Civic Coalition, PSL, Poland 2050 and the Left Party, the functions of the Marshal of the Sejm in the second part of the term will be assigned to Włodzimierz Czarzasty (the Left Party).
On October 15, parliamentary elections ended in Poland. According to their results, the Law and Justice party received 35.38% of the votes. Its main opponent, the center-right Civic Coalition, received 30.7% of the vote, thus finishing in second place. Next came the “Third Way”, a center-right voting bloc, with a result of 14.4% of the vote.
