Lithuania does not exclude the complete closure of the border with Belarus because of the Wagner PMC fighters stationed there. This was stated by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, writes TASS.
“We should not only talk about measures at the national level, but also discuss algorithms for what to do if the situation worsens even more, including closing the border with Belarus. But this should take place in coordination between Poland, Lithuania and Latvia,” the President said at a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
On July 29, Morawiecki announced the movement of about a hundred Wagner PMC fighters to the Belarusian-Polish border in the area of the Suwalki corridor and called this decision “a step towards a further hybrid attack on Polish territory.” On July 31, Deputy Minister of the Interior and Administration of Poland Maciej Wansik, on the air of a Polish radio station, said that Polish services control the actions of PMC Wagner in Belarus. According to him, the situation should not be underestimated.
August 1, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko declaredthat the fighters of PMC “Wagner” do not plan to attack the territory of Poland. According to him, the purpose of the exercises is the transfer of combat experience. The White House also noted the absence of threats to Poland from Wagner.
On the same day, the Ministry of Defense of Poland reportedthat in the area of the village of Belovezha, Belarusian helicopters violated the airspace of the country. After the incident, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak convened a meeting of the National Security Committee and ordered an increase in the number of soldiers on the border and the allocation of additional forces, including combat helicopters.
