The prime ministers of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on Thursday signed a declaration on the steps needed to speed up the process of connecting to the electricity grid in continental Europe and the timing of their implementation.
The press service of the Estonian government cites Prime Minister Kai Kallas as saying that Estonia will separate from the Russian power grid almost a year earlier than planned. She also added that the Baltic countries are working to finally get rid of dependence on Russian electricity. Kallas stressed that staying in the Russian power grid is a risk for Estonian consumers.
It is noted that the connection of the Baltic countries to the electricity grid of continental Europe was agreed by the European Commission (EC), as well as Poland and the three Baltic states in 2019. Kallas pointed out that the previously planned date for accession was the end of 2025, but against the backdrop of the Ukrainian conflict, the Baltic countries want to speed up this process.
