The political scientist explained the reason for the synchronous application of the LNR and the DNR for referendums

Republics are different, fate and circumstances are the same: security guarantees are needed

With a difference of several hours on September 19, the Public Chambers of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics asked for an immediate referendum on joining Russia. A similar initiative also arose from the CAA of the Kherson region. Who initiated such synchronous decisions, whether it will be possible to organize referendums in the current situation and in what timeframe, political scientist and political strategist, State Duma deputy Dmitry Gusev shared with MK.

The initiative of such “applications” for a referendum, most likely, really comes from the republics of Donbass, the expert claims. Such synchronicity in these circumstances is understandable: both republics are in the same situation, and their leadership is constantly looking at each other’s actions.

“Inhabitants of both the Luhansk and Donetsk republics suffered equally for eight years,” recalls Gusev. – Even in Russia they are accustomed to call them at the same time: LDNR. Their fate is the same in recent years, although the regions are certainly different. And within the framework of one fate, people simultaneously made such a decision.

The time for preparing referendums, the political scientist is sure, may take a little. “Different terms are called, but in any case, you definitely shouldn’t delay with this,” says Dmitry Gusev. There was time for “shadow” training, he said: back in 2014, many politicians advocated the need to annex Lugansk and Donetsk to Russia.

– I am sure that the referendums will be held without problems and will show the “Crimean”, almost unanimous, percentage, – the expert added.

In favor of holding plebiscites as soon as possible – and the fact that the Kyiv side, according to Dmitry Gusev, will try to prevent them. Namely, more intensively than even hitherto, to fire and bomb, to threaten people. “This is the most important way to prevent voting,” the political scientist explains.

“In the republics, they believe that the situation is “long overdue,” the main part of the population wants security guarantees and sees them exclusively in joining Russia,” Alexei Chesnakov, director of the Center for Current Politics, told MK. According to him, the terms of the referendum will be determined as a result of the decisions of the authorities.

We add that one of the consequences of the potential accession of the LPR and DPR to Russia, according to a number of experts, will be to increase the security of these territories. Thus, the editor-in-chief of Russia Today, Margarita Simonyan, has already stated in her telegram channel that if the attack on Donetsk and Lugansk joins, they will become a full-fledged war between Ukraine and the NATO alliance behind it against Russia.

Recall that even now settlements on Russian territory within the 1991 borders are often subjected to rocket and artillery shelling. In particular, the border areas of the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk regions are under threat, similar reports from the Voronezh region come less often, air defense works in the Crimea, Krasnodar Territory, Rostov Region.
