For the first time in the country’s history, an anti-ballistic missile defense (BMD) system has been deployed over Polish territory. This was stated by the Minister of National Defense of Poland, Mariusz Blaszczak, transmits Polish agency PAP.

“For the first time in history, Warsaw is receiving a missile defense system,” he said.

According to him, combat duty will begin on October 6. The basis of the missile defense system will be the American Patriot complex, which Poland received less than a year ago, Blaszczak added. He noted that during this time, Polish military personnel conducted several exercises with launchers.

Poland and USA signed an agreement to supply Warsaw with the Patriot complex in July 2017. According to The Guardian newspaper, the transaction amount was supposed to be about $5 billion. In March 2017, the then current Polish Minister of Defense Antoni Macierewicz stated that the transaction amount would not exceed $7.7 billion
