The personnel shortage in Russia in 2023 amounted to 4.8 million people – Kommersant

In 2022–2023, the labor shortage in Russia has increased significantly; at the end of the current year, the country lacks approximately 4.8 million workers. Such statistics are given in a study by Nikolai Akhapkin, a researcher at the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which we read “News”.

In his study, Nikolai Akhapkin draws attention to Rosstat data, according to which by the middle of this year, 6.8% of the payroll number of employees was required to fill vacant positions. In 2022, 5.8% of workers were missing. “If we extend the data presented by Rosstat to the entire population of employed people, then the shortage of workers in 2023 will be approximately 4.8 million people,” the author points out.

Over the past two years, the labor shortage in Russia has sharply increased, the study says. The shortage of employees, as Mr. Akhapkin notes, manifested itself even in conditions when the number of people already working (labor supply) remains stable. Unsatisfied demand for labor has already led to a slowdown in the Russian economy, but the impact of changes in the labor market varies across different sectors of the economy.

At the end of 2023, the personnel shortage turned out to be one of the main obstacles to business development. According to a study by HR-Tech company Potok, this year there is a shortage of personnel collided 88% of the companies she surveyed, especially representatives of large businesses (93%). Due to a shortage of workers and increasing demands from job seekers, 13% of companies have stopped recruiting for some positions, and 2% have completely abandoned the search.
