The pandemic has forced macaques on a Thai island to master tools

Biologists reported that in 2022, macaques of the subspecies Macaca fascicularis fascicularis on the Thai island of Koh Ped began to actively use stones as tools. Previously, such behavior was not noticed in this subspecies.
At least 17 individuals began using stones to break mollusk shells, according to an article in the American Journal of Primatology.
Zoologists said that macaques needed to master stones as tools because during the lockdown period the animals lost the food that tourists brought to the island.
